Victor Fernandez: a top 3 finisher in Pozo Izquierdo since 2006 | Photo: Carter/PWA

It has already been considered one of the windiest days ever in the history of the event. The Spanish competition had gusts of over 50 knots, and forced windsurfers to pick their smallest rigs.

As a result, all sailors touched the sky with their boards and sails. Fernandez, a top 3 finisher in Pozo Izquierdo since 2006, landed perfect double forwards, one of the biggest stalled forwards of the contest, and multiple goiters on the wave.

“It’s a great way to start the season. Philip obviously came into the event as the favorite as he lives in Vargas with similar conditions and he is the reigning world champion,” noted Victor Fernandez.

“The final was super close, Philip jumped better than me, but I did better in the waves. At the start of the heat I wasn’t really thinking. I just went free sailing and focused on giving my best.”

Daida Moreno also knows Pozo very well, and she only lost here once in her career. In the final, the Spanish beat the always-dangerous Sarah-Quita Offringa with an impressive tabletop forward, a stalled forward and a beautiful back loop.

“Pozo Izquierdo is the beach where I train every day, so I guess the timing and my local knowledge is a big advantage and allows me to show what I’m capable in the 14-minute heat. I really enjoyed my sailing and had a lot of fun, and I think that showed in my sailing and the result,” concluded Moreno.
